Delivering preventative healthcare in Africa with Armef Health Africa

Earlier this year Citi Health partnered with charity Amref Health Africa, pledging to donate annually to support their vital work, which means every vaccination we administer to clients in the UK also contributes towards delivering preventative healthcare in Africa.

As a female-owned company working in healthcare, the wellbeing of all women and children is close to our hearts, and the difference Amref are making to the families they work with remains a constant source of inspiration.

Now that Amref has released their impact report for 2023, we are thrilled to see that our donations are going towards a charity which has values which are so well-aligned with our own: “A South Sudanese proverb says we wish two things for our children: the first is roots; the second is wings,” commented Camilla Knox-Peebles, Chief Executive, Amref Health Africa UK. “This reflects our approach to creating lasting health change in Africa. Our Global Strategy and UK strategy both focus on building strong foundations with people-centred health systems, and to innovate and be bold to transform people’s access to healthcare.”

Last year alone Amref implemented 193 programmes in 35 countries and their programmes reached 16.6 million people directly; they also provided 60,500 trainings to health workers based in facilities and in communities across Africa.

As planned, the main focus for Citi Health’s donations will be the brilliant mobile health clinics Amref has developed. For people living with chronic conditions, including non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like diabetes, asthma, cancers and hypertension, access to screening and regular treatment services is essential to keep healthy. Amref’s fleet of mobile clinics provide high-quality NCD healthcare and vaccination services, delivered by trained health workers, direct to last-mile communities in remote areas that traditionally struggle to access healthcare at the facility level.

Their mobile clinics programme in Kenya has already reached 45,000 people with screening services and provided NCD training to 1,717 health workers; in addition to continuing this work there are plans to include lung cancer screening and HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccination – and we are looking forward to having more to report on this into 2025.

Back here in the UK, vaccination is still the best approach to combat preventable diseases at work, from COVID-19 to Flu, which costs the economy millions every year through lost working days.

If you want to  protect your workforce against Flu this winter, or organise an on-site clinic at your place of work for corporate COVID-19 vaccinations, please get in touch to arrange for one of our friendly, experienced clinicians to visit your place of work at a time of your choosing.
