Flu Season
In brief, everyone knows that the Flu is bad news. However, no one really knows unless they have actually had it. The reality is that this virus is at best very unpleasant, leading to time off work (mainly spent in bed) and spreads like wildfire.
WHY TAKE THE FLU JAB?
Flu is highly contagious, and the strain changes each year. Only through vaccination can you reduce the chance of catching flu or at best ameliorate the severity of the symptoms. The strain changes each year, so vaccinations every year are required. 6-8 months protection is provided, so September to October is the optimum time to vaccinate.
The flu vaccine does not contain any ‘live’ viruses and is generally well tolerated.
WHY THE QUADRIVALENT VACCINE?
The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends the 4-strain vaccine. This provides the best protection, covering 4 different types of the flu virus, including swine flu. During the last 10 years the vaccine has generally been a good match for the circulating strains.
We only buy our vaccines from the leading manufacturer and we only buy the highest standard of vaccine. The vaccine will also provide cover against Swine Flu.
The World health Organisation (WHO) has recommended for the 2020 - 2021 northern hemisphere influenza season the following:
an A/Guangdong-Maonan/SWL1536/2019 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus;
an A/Hong Kong/2671/2019 (H3N2)-like virus;
a B/Washington/02/2019 (B/Victoria lineage)-like virus; and
a B/Phuket/3073/2013 (B/Yamagata lineage)-like virus.
WHY NOW?
Early vaccination will cover employees over the winter months / flu season. Immunisation in September 2020 can provide cover until September 2021. This is most cost effective for your staff, and your business, by reducing days off sick and widespread illness. It is proven to improve staff morale.
WHO should have the vaccine?
Citi Health can give the flu vaccine to anyone aged 18 years and over. The over 65’s vaccine we would advise patients to see their GP. Every year the flu strain mutates so it’s never the same twice, however vaccination each year leads to a build up of immunity and in turn further reduces an individual’s chance of catching the flu. Whilst there is never any guarantee you wont still get the flu, the vaccines will greatly reduce the effects in this unlikely event.
The vaccine is not recommended for those with an allergy to eggs and poultry, or those who have previously had an adverse reaction to the flu vaccine.
Your nurse will provide a leave behind card with information on possible reactions and a helpline for assistance or advice.
